Hong Kong Local Reef

 

Hong Kong is surrounded by sea and has a sea surface area of about 1800 sq. km. It lies within the sub-tropical area on the southern coast of China at the estuary of Pearl River. Trough primarily tropical, Hong Kong is also affected by the seasonal fluctuation of warm,cold water and monsoon weather conditions, therefore there is an admixture of tropical and temperate forms like corals, sea grasses, mangroves, fishes and dolphins.

 

Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park

The Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park is a sheltered bay situated at the northern coastline of the Sai Kung Peninsula.

 

 

 

Being a sheltered bay and with good water quality, the sea area provideds a good environment for corals to flourish. The coral communities are different from tropical reef. The bay has a rich coral community. The representative species are Pavona decusata, Platygyra sinensis, Porities labuta, Alveopora irregularis and Cyphastrea seralia. Thirty-nine out of 50 local stoney coral species can be found there. Furthermore, a wide variety of animal species of scientific interests can be found there which demonstrated its ecological significance.
